This is a gimmick that may or may not sell to some, but it’s not one that is particularly useful. The full screen is difficult to read in sunlight and is very reflective, but it is functional and does do the job.

The Jalou is actually quite nice to use – it has a familiar style of interface and is in no way complicated or encumbered with fussy additions – and everything is neat and simple in terms of function.

A cute, trendy phone like this really needs to win friends in the audio stakes – this is a model aimed at the younger generation after all – and the sound quality is pretty good when all is said and done. The problem is the usual bugbear – no standard jack, which limits you to the very poor headphones supplied with the phone. When are manufacturers going to realise this is something that is doing them absolutely no favours at all?

The 3.2 inch screen, with its 16 million colours and touch screen operation, is a delight. It is both bold and impressive and also bright, and one of the best we have seen so far. Browsing is superbly accessible with plenty of space to use, and not only that but the on screen QWERTY keyboard is also a very good effort and one that is very easy to use. Those who are used to Android will revel in the system and those who are not will soon understand what all the fuss is about; easy to use, versatile and with a wide range of apps, Android is a well thought out system that deserves praise.

Five megapixels with a flash, autofocus and all the bits you expect with a decent camera, this one takes great pictures that look crisp and clear on the superb screen. There really isn’t much else to say but that this is a successful camera that will be well used.

While the music player is a simple affair – with MP3 and various formats as expected – it is a decent enough system and the welcome inclusion of a 3.5mm jack mans you are not limited to manufacturer supplied sub standard headphones. It is nothing particularly special, but it does a good job, and where calling and talking is concerned there is an absolutely clear and bright sound that will be satisfactory to all.

The ecological aspects seem to stop at the recycled, green friendly case and the somewhat pointless ‘Green Calculator’ – the former one of the handsets worst points and the latter a gimmick. For anyone who wants a clear conscience and a great phone, only the lack of a 3.5mm jack should preclude you from considering the Elm.

The modern and very stylish overall appearance of the Omnia Pro is faultless. The curved black casing and superb 3.5 inch screen – 1 16 million colour device that is the equal of any on the market – and slide out keyboard are all neatly integrated into a very good looking device. Make no mistake, however, that this is not a lightweight – and nor does it try to be at just under 160g.

No we come to the first problem, and one that we really wish we didn’t have to raise for it's absolutely fundamental: the interface, Windows 6.5, is all but unfathomable. We may be exaggerating in some way but this review looks at the Omnia in comparison to others, and most others are much easier to use. Why has Samsung imbued such a good looking and impressively specified handset with a system that is clunky, slow and very hard to use? It’s something that we find hard to answer given the options available. If you can get used to it, however, you have a decent if flawed system at hand.

Now we’re talking; five mega pixels may not set the world alight but this is a very good camera indeed, with LED flash and auto focus plus full editing included, but it gets better. The Panorama Shot and Best Shot features make taking pictures a joy – these technological marvels raise this camera beyond the very good to the extremely impressive level, and the results are quite amazing. A separate video calling camera is also part of the package.

The original 6600 has been such a success for Nokia that the company has followed the time honoured tradition of simply improving on a winner. Aimed at the middle of the market, the 6600i comes with HSDPA, EDGE and GSM and is a dual band phone – all pretty standard stuff and far from groundbreaking – and is a neat looking design that will nevertheless win many friends along the way.

In fact we like the way it looks – the metal casing is also very sturdy and quite stylish and the brushed metal look very much a 21st century look – and it feels good too, weighing in at an acceptable if not featherweight 110g and a size of 93x45x14mm. There are more compact slide phones on the market, but not many – this is a very neat design indeed and one that is as compact as needs be.

Being so small means there is no room for a massive screen yet the 2.2” TFT 16 million colour version that the 6600i boasts is no poor substitute. The change to a flat screen – a noticeable difference to the original model – aims to eliminate some of the damage seen ion earlier models, and the accelerometer is a decent system that compares will with rivals. There have been complaints of poor brightness, but we think it usable in all but the brightest of lights, and no worse than most rivals from the bigger players in the market.

Very much a prerequisite of any mobile these days, the E200 does not make great claims for its standard issue 3.2 megapixel camera and a lack of flash indicates this is not one of its primary aims. There are some simple effects, even some basic filters, and autofocus too, yet while we like the capability of taking quick fire photo’s and found the results perfectly adequate, this is not a phone to buy for the camera alone.

First things first, there is no Wi-Fi capability on the E200. This may be a problem for some, and understandably so. Included are Bluetooth and USB connections, plus GPS and a quad band set up that means universal use, and the usual messaging services that should be a part and parcel of any phone these days come as standard. It is geared towards social networking use and that will appeal to a wide variety of users.

The E200 is surprisingly impressive in this area although as a phone without many supremely power sapping features one should expect that. 400 minutes standby and 300 minutes talk time are up there in the acceptable range, and the addition of a microSD card is a neat feature.

This is a thoroughly decent phone in its class and a good effort by ACER, but the problems with the screen and the sound quality of the audio are off-putting. If you want a good looking and great to handle phone that takes reasonable snapshots – at a great price – this may be worth considering, but there are others at the price that offer Wi-Fi connection, something we consider a standard option these days.
